About this artwork
In Last Day of Autumn, I use a patina technique that involves applying layers of liquid paint, allowing each to dry, and then washing the entire surface to reveal a luminous, textured field of color. The process mirrors the slow transformation found in nature — a rhythm of layering, dissolving, and renewal.
My inspiration comes from the patterns and organic compositions I observe in nature: the symmetry of leaves, the fading warmth of sunsets, the… interplay of decay and light at summer’s end. The textured surface adds tactile depth, inviting the viewer to experience the painting not just visually but almost physically — like the sensation of standing in the last golden light of the season.
The edges remain painted, intentionally left exposed to reveal the creative process and lend the work a subtle sculptural quality. The painting is signed on the back and ready for hanging.
« I strive to create something of beauty and light; something that gives the viewer hope; something that expresses both the oneness of life and the ever transforming elements of life. »
Heidi Thompson is an experienced Canadian painter who has exhibited her work in the US, Canada and Switzerland. She originally started out as a figurative painter striving to express the human condition, but soon decided to move away from the darkness and suffering she found herself portraying to a colorful abstract style full of hope, light and beauty. Today, she creates a bold and colorful 'Multicolours' series, as well as minimalist works that reflect the style of 'Monochrome Energy Fields.'
