About this artwork
A dense row of poplars fills almost the entire picture plane. Rhythmically structured in different shades of green, the foliage appears both vibrant and cohesive. Only upon closer inspection do reddish-brown patches of color emerge behind the trunks – hints of a house that eludes view and almost disappears into the greenery.
Although nature dominates, this is not a rural scene. The trees appear planted, ordered, part of a designed space. Architecture… is present, but understated – not as a motif, but as a subtle trace behind the vegetation.
Typical of Hjalmar Thelen's work on urban transitional spaces, a quiet tension unfolds here between nature and the built environment. The image thrives on restraint and concentration, offering a contemplative view of places where city and green space merge.
Hjalmar Thelen (1962–2017) was a Berlin painter and draftsman who made the unspectacular visible: faces, places, and everyday scenes. His works—on paper, cardboard, or canvas—are direct, concentrated, and characterized by quiet precision. Without academic training, but with a clear eye and a delicate touch, he created over 2,000 works. His art is quiet, figurative, narrative—and characterized by respect for what is depicted. His studio was his apartment, but he most enjoyed traveling by bicycle, armed with a field easel and paints, along Berlin's canals, rivers, and lakes.
