About this artwork
A bright, sunny day, the street lined with lush summer greenery. Cars are parked on both sides, as if the destination were very close – perhaps an outdoor swimming pool, a park, a place where life is a little easier.
In this picture, Hjalmar Thelen captures the mood of a Sunday afternoon: the shimmering light, the inertia of the warmth, the sense of leisure and transience.
The bold, broad brushstrokes coalesce into a quiet observation of the everyday… – those small scenes we know but rarely consciously see.
A work that radiates tranquility and at the same time awakens memories – of departure and arrival, of the smell of sun on asphalt, of that special moment between destination and journey.
Hjalmar Thelen (1962–2017) was a Berlin painter and draftsman who made the unspectacular visible: faces, places, and everyday scenes. His works—on paper, cardboard, or canvas—are direct, concentrated, and characterized by quiet precision. Without academic training, but with a clear eye and a delicate touch, he created over 2,000 works. His art is quiet, figurative, narrative—and characterized by respect for what is depicted. His studio was his apartment, but he most enjoyed traveling by bicycle, armed with a field easel and paints, along Berlin's canals, rivers, and lakes.
