About this artwork
A cup of coffee, a pepper mill, an opened package – an everyday moment condensed here into painterly tension. The background of green and turquoise tones is not a neutral space, but a dynamic field of color. Visible brushstrokes cause surface and depth to intertwine.
The bright yellow of the coffee packet provides a warm counterpoint to the cool green. The white cup forms the calm centerpiece, while brown and ochre tones ground the composition.…
The impasto application of paint lends the work a strong physical presence. In one spot, the paint is applied so thickly that the surface cracks – a visible sign of painterly energy. This painting combines the everyday with concentration and bestows a quiet dignity upon simple objects.
Hjalmar Thelen (1962–2017) was a Berlin painter and draftsman who made the unspectacular visible: faces, places, and everyday scenes. His works—on paper, cardboard, or canvas—are direct, concentrated, and characterized by quiet precision. Without academic training, but with a clear eye and a delicate touch, he created over 2,000 works. His art is quiet, figurative, narrative—and characterized by respect for what is depicted. His studio was his apartment, but he most enjoyed traveling by bicycle, armed with a field easel and paints, along Berlin's canals, rivers, and lakes.
