About this artwork
Starting from a sketch of a portrait, I begin to build and then disassemble a head. Through the rhythmic setting of the colour, through layers and overlays, through destruction and concentration, a permanent process of change is created. Just like in humans there is a constant change of cells, body and mind. The head is constantly re-emerging and at the same time dissolving more and more in its structure. What remains is a rhythmic, dense play of… colors that depicts the subtlety of the person. It is an allusion to the dissolving of matter and the permanent energy, the imprint of the soul that remains.
« Art touches our soul and tries to grasp the truth. »
Ilona Ottenbreit is a German painter, sculptor and draftsman who has exhibited extensively in both solo and group events in Germany and the United Kingdom. Her works examine rhythm and movement, as it is the 'cause of our lives'. Ottenbreit's sculptures portray groups of people in movement, representing a collective connection, or oneness. She begins her process by sketching and examining motion, following the dancer with lines and recording what she can intuitively grasp.
