About this artwork
Starting with a portrait or a sketch, I start building and dissolving a head. By rhythmically setting the color, the head emerges and disappears again and again. In doing so, it dissolves more and more in its structure. My painted heads stand as independent works and show the traces of the process of dissolution and change. It is a metaphor for our lives, in which we constantly change and rediscover ourselves, up to and including the dissolution…
of matter at the end of our lives. And what remains is the essence, the trace or imprint of our soul.

Ilona Ottenbreit is a German painter, sculptor and draftsman who has exhibited extensively in both solo and group events in Germany and the United Kingdom. Her works examine rhythm and movement, as it is the 'cause of our lives'. Ottenbreit's sculptures portray groups of people in movement, representing a collective connection, or oneness. She begins her process by sketching and examining motion, following the dancer with lines and recording what she can intuitively grasp.
