A Russian native, former resident of the US and Australia, and now a New-Zealander to stay, Ilya Volykhine’s works combine about as many themes, sources and references as steps he’s travelled. Rejecting a conventional narrative logic, he manipulates space, surface and technique to create paintings that are at once perversely funny and poetically contemplative.
