About this artwork
Salle de Bain situates itself in the slippage between private interiority and expansive imagined space. The title, French for “bathroom”, anchors the work in an intimate, enclosed setting, yet the painting itself resists containment. Its swirling underpainting evokes condensation, steam, and shifting light, but also the suggestion of a distant horizon. Like a mirror fogged by water, the surface becomes a place where interior perception expands outward… into something resembling landscape or seascape. Above this atmospheric ground, glyph-like marks drift across the surface. These forms oscillate between an invented alphabet and fragments of plant life, as if thoughts, symbols, or organic traces have momentarily condensed on the picture plane. They inhabit the painting the way droplets cling to glass: both present and constantly on the verge of dissolving.
*International Artist *Awarded *Highly Qualified *Experienced Lecturer *Blue Chip Irene Watson, a Scottish artist trained in painting, drawing, and printmaking, is deeply rooted in both studio practice and public engagement. Her conceptual abstraction ranges from allegorical oil works, often on canvas or linen, to cross-disciplinary series inspired by modernist and feminist influences. She constructs layered surfaces through bold gestures and embraces fluid, unpredictable processes, creating a dynamic play between balance and discord. Her evocative works draw viewers in with beauty and tension, ultimately conveying profound connections to human vulnerability, environmental fragility, and the emotional resonance of lived experience.
