About this artwork
This large-scale abstract triptych uses text, material, and gesture to explore disorientation, guidance, and the experience of moving through uncertainty.
The work draws on a fragmented poetic narrative — a child navigating woodland space while being guided by a distant voice — but resists linear storytelling. Instead, text appears as interruption, instruction, and trace, embedded within layers of oil, wax, and sand.
Material density and scale… create a physical sense of movement and suspension. References to landscape and language coexist without resolving, allowing the viewer to move through the panels as one would move through space: partially oriented, partially lost.
Influences from graffiti, abstraction, and text-based practices are absorbed into a restrained but forceful visual language. The triptych format reinforces rhythm and progression without closure.
Measuring 1.5 × 3 metres, the work is intended for architectural settings and sustained viewing.
*International Artist *Awarded *Highly Qualified *Experienced Lecturer *Blue Chip Irene Watson, a Scottish artist trained in painting, drawing, and printmaking, is deeply rooted in both studio practice and public engagement. Her conceptual abstraction ranges from allegorical oil works, often on canvas or linen, to cross-disciplinary series inspired by modernist and feminist influences. She constructs layered surfaces through bold gestures and embraces fluid, unpredictable processes, creating a dynamic play between balance and discord. Her evocative works draw viewers in with beauty and tension, ultimately conveying profound connections to human vulnerability, environmental fragility, and the emotional resonance of lived experience.
