When the Tilapia are caught they are first filleted. These fillets are packaged for export or for sale to wealthy buyers. The remains of the fish are salted or smoked and are prepared for purchase… by the poorer segment of the market.
A maribu bird overlooks the fish market, waiting for its moment to grab a scrap of food.

Isabel Corthier, born in 1977 in Belgium, is a documentary photographer based in Cape Town, South Africa. Her photographic works are deeply invested in creating dignified, humanizing representations of communities that have been effected by political turmoil or other forms of conflict. Her works are powerful portraits of people in various walks of life, both intimate and resounding in their affect.
