As the human world is preoccupied with the pandemic the earth both thrives in human neglect and suffers. The environmental regulations of decades are being undone as people look away, distracted by life and death and the existential moment at hand. This image began… in a magical moment of afternoon light on the San Juan Islands. A secret pond, the criss-crossing labyrinth of twigs and silence. Back in the studio the reality of our world came to the surface.
This print is not a reproduction of a painting, but a contemporary print in which the print itself is the only form in which the artwork exists.

Iskra Johnson is an American artist who looks to explore how emotion can intersect with architectural structure. Early exposure to solvents meant that she was unable to work in a traditional printmaking studio. However, with her continued love for the medium, Johnson’s digital works have gained a distinct hybrid quality that is often taken for silkscreen or lithography. In this multilayered practice, Johnson is able to explore the complex notions of nostalgia, loss, place and displacement that are entailed in our rapidly changing urban environment.
