About this artwork
Madonna born Louise Ciccone on 16 Aug 1958, is a American pop music singer-songwriter and actress. The “Queen of pop” rose to fame in the early 1980s and became known for reinventing herself. She sporadically appropriated a “Marilyn Monroe look” since 1983.
Pop art Is often characterized by Appropriation Art, where the artist wants the viewer to recognize the image they copied and recontextualized into a whole new artwork.
Such a fitting image… shot by world renown fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier of Madonna in 1990.
I remix and repurposed the original photographer’s intention, by altering and reinterpreting it to reach a different audience.
Reverse printed on Plexiglass, gives the print a high gloss finish and contemporary feel. The back frame with 2 small D-rings makes the piece ready to hang and allows the print to float 2.5cm from the wall.

Ivan Smith's reaction against unsustainable fast fashion, after a successful career as a fashion and textile designer, drove him to direct his creativity towards more enduring arts.
The South African painter works across disciplines, with an emphasis on mixed media painting and drawing. Since January 2020, Smith's workflow became increasingly digital, resulting in more conceptual work. His contemporary and figurative works play with pattern and design, as well as elaborate motifs, embedding mannequin-like subjects in an aesthetic "fabric of the world".
