About this artwork
My wife Lolly was part of a book group that routinely met at our home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. One of the group, Simone noticed and was taken by some of the Figures paintings on our wall. Simone had a quiet but 'look again' beauty to her. She was then in a years log battle with cancer.Later we gifted her with a small Figures painting. In response she sent a Thank you note. The note in part read: "I find myself pausing by it daily admiring your…
gestures and the economy of line." She passed not long after that. In all the years since then I have heard numerous people tell me the same thing ,that the Figures give them pause. And for that rememberance, I thank you, Simone.

To say that I, J Fitzpatrick am a self-taught painter with formal training is to miss the point. Yes, I have had formal training. yes, I am by nature an auto didact but for me painting is more experiential than an, assertive initiated act. For me painting is intentionaly not doing or thinking anything. It is sitting waiting quietly for what I can best describe as a visit from something outside myself. It may be there right away or it might not come for days. And then suddenly it is there-- an image that had not been there moments before and I go with it.
