About this artwork
When I was 12 years old a Navaho blanket came into my house. A maternal great aunt had travelled to the American southwest in the late 1880's and brought it back to her home in Far Rockaway, Queens. With her passing it came to me in the 50's and although it has been with me ever since I only learned recently what some of the multiple symbols, often repeated in the squaring of 2 meant. Of note here is the symbolic power represented in the number 2.…
It says that reality is never 1. There is a balance in the reality of all things; a two ness if you will. You may believe something that is contrary to what I believe. Both are part of the reality that thing is. This painting represents that we see one thing but there is a second side waiting to be seen, entered. An so the title: Inner;Enter

To say that I, J Fitzpatrick am a self-taught painter with formal training is to miss the point. Yes, I have had formal training. yes, I am by nature an auto didact but for me painting is more experiential than an, assertive initiated act. For me painting is intentionaly not doing or thinking anything. It is sitting waiting quietly for what I can best describe as a visit from something outside myself. It may be there right away or it might not come for days. And then suddenly it is there-- an image that had not been there moments before and I go with it.
