About this artwork
I have been painting Figures since the late 60's. The effect these subtle renderings of the human form have upon people varies, spanning the full range of emotions we as individuals possess with respect to ourselves and others; allowing for each a personal interpretation of these figures, be they seen in groups of singly, as friends or strangers; evoking moods of love or sadness, of communion or isolation. To say that I, J Fitzpatrick am a self-taught painter with formal training is to miss the point. Yes, I have had formal training. yes, I am by nature an auto didact but for me painting is more experiential than an, assertive initiated act. For me painting is intentionaly not doing or thinking anything. It is sitting waiting quietly for what I can best describe as a visit from something outside myself. It may be there right away or it might not come for days. And then suddenly it is there-- an image that had not been there moments before and I go with it.
