About this artwork
Out on assignment in the middle of South Africa's Karoo region, a journalist and I drove into a swarm of locusts on the outskirts of some godforsaken town. The sky darkened and an odd insect scent hung in the air. The noise was unbelievable. All around impoverished children from the nearby settlement were running around trying to pick off stragglers in the swarm, seeing as they make for good eating. Utter chaos. The journo tried to lock the car doors,…
but I jumped out like a madman, running into the fray and pointing my lens into the shadowy sun.

Jac Kritzinger is an award-winning fine art photographer with a rich background in travel, portrait, and documentary work, holding a BA Honors in Film and Visual Media.
Kritzinger expertly balances an edgy, stylized aesthetic with a sense of fundamental realism, utilizing emotive color pairing and dynamic lighting while aiming to capture moments authentically in-camera. For the most part, his photographs are deeply personal while at the same time evoking a sense of universal, mystical transcendence, transforming the ordinary into something sublime and deeply evocative. His more conceptual projects often features a strong social conscience and commentary on modern culture. The language of light ultimately illuminates all, and in that sense his work can be seen as a form of visual poetry, inviting viewers to reconnect with a World often lost in plain sight.
