This impressive, deliberately provocative work of art speaks more to current events than to Manet. The young man lying on a sumptuous bed immediately catches the eye. The composition echoes classic female nudes, but is distinguished by the bold presence… of a man, offering an intriguing reversal of traditional roles.
Her somewhat lascivious pose fits quite well into the opulent atmosphere of the room, magnified by lush draperies and soft cushions. To the right, a feminized figure (but... who knows? A servant...?) presents a bouquet of flowers whose brilliance enhances the palette of rich colors and evokes a little tenderness. The silent interaction between the two figures gives a dimension (...)
