About this artwork
I was working on a large abstract when an eye appeared. Just and eye, which looked worldly-wise and slightly jaded. From that eye, a figure of a man dressed in an old-fashioned jacket and powdered wig. took form. I began to think of him as Domenico Scarlatti, the 17th-18th century composer. I love his music and listen to it often. I really had no idea what he looked like, but I painted him anyway, playing his harpsichord. He seemed to be receiving… inspiration from a little bird perched on the right. Later, when I looked him up, I was stunned by the resemblance between my painting and an engraving of him! This is what happens when I allow myself to see into the chaos of paint with no preconceptions. Images of people, animals and places emerge, sometimes becoming something substantial. I felt that perhaps that Signore Scarlatti had visited my studio!

James Griffin is a painter with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Pratt Institute, known for his five-decade career in illustration and recent focus on personal art. He masterfully blends realistic techniques with intuition, allowing subconscious dream imagery and symbolism to emerge through slow-drying acrylics—brushing, scraping, and squeegeeing the canvas in an organic process. His style is rooted in realism but remains open to discovery, often evoking the mystery of dreams. Griffin’s paintings convey a profound sense of wonder, spirituality, and the emotional resonance of simply being alive.
