About this artwork
After completing the piece "A Study in Richness" he was captivated by the deep, organic relationship between black and gold. The blackness of the backplate was achieved after chemically treating the cold rolled plate four times with an acid solution. This blackening process is very different from a paint. Jason Rhinevault primarily works with negative spaces and depth in his pieces. The American sculptor offsets some of his compositions from the back mounting plate, by as much as an inch, creating a visual illusion. The use of negative space and depth gives the viewer several aspects to consider. Rhinevault is drawn to metal, as a medium, for its strength and organic qualities. He considers the patina application as important as the welding process.
