About this artwork
Inspired by my memories of lovely fabrics, textures and patterns of little gift boxes made in China and Japan, I played with my own paintings cutting shapes and pasting them onto the canvas to evoke the same visceral experience. There are parts of as many as seven paintings in this piece. The series is called Energetic Interventions because I desperately wanted to generate some excitement being trapped by inclement weather...
This piece reflects… the fragmentation we're witnessing in our world—the breaking apart of what we hold beautiful. I create it through an act that feels both painful and necessary: taking my own paintings, works I've loved and found beautiful, and literally cutting them apart.
I gather fragments from several paintings and reassemble them on wooden panels or canvas then seal everything in layers of hot wax using the encaustic technique. With a heat gun, I smooth the wax until it has a lustrous finish that can be gently touched with careful fingers.
