About this artwork
Printemps is about the deep love I had for my grandmother who raised me when I was quite young. I remember watching her sew beautiful fabrics by hand into dresses. This piece commemorates the precious time I got to spend with her. She died when I was 14 years old, she'd suffered for two years with lung cancer. Mamie (grandmother) was a creative individual also drew magical landscapes using only a ballpoint pen and discarded shirt boards from dry…
cleaned shirts. Mamie had been a performer, opening for stars at the famed Shubert Theater, singing and playing the piano. Just before I was born, Mamie's husband died, and my grandmother was most likely struggling with depression. I loved and felt compassion for my sad grandmother. In adulthood I came to understand the syndrome of abuse, and that Mamie had been an abused child and showing love was challenging for her. This piece is the first of the series. *On loan for "Artists from Home" @ Hancock Shaker Village/Year of the Woman Exhibits
