About this artwork
This piece is made using partially unwoven burlap glued to the linen support, then colored. The finishing color is oil paint, applied with a sponge, stencil, misting with a toothbrush and rubbing with a flat brush.
The series to which it belongs is dedicated to movement: the lightness of the wind, of dancing, of flying in the air or of the flow carried by the waters, and here, for this particular piece, the movement of a breathless race... It was… for me the opportunity for a small bet, because the textile material that I use often turns out to be rebellious. The challenge consisted in constraining it to flexibility and escaping the stiffness to which it becomes complete once glued. This is how these few creations were born, where these clusters of threads seem to float, drawing the arcs and curves that can form the movements carried by the body's drive and the aspiration to freedom.
The materials I use—most often reclaimed textiles—already carry within them tensions, a weariness, a memory. They don't allow themselves to be molded: they resist, elude me, maintain their own directions. One must negotiate with them. As soon as they are fixed to the support, something is lost. Constrained, the material no longer moves. It flattens, deprived of the momentum that animated it. Its presence remains, but as if suspended. This is where color comes in. It acts as a developer. With color, the fibers visually detach from the background, gain depth, seem to rise and move. What appeared frozen regains its intensity, begins to evolve in space. It's not about depicting anything, but about transfiguring what is already there. Color doesn't create any form. It shifts the gaze, reveals a depth, an energy, a movement already latent. Through it, what seemed inert comes back to life.
