About this artwork
Jennifer was reading a philosophical essay on language whilst working on this painting. "Sophia Speaks' by Bruce Alderman. The essay describes how various philosophical approaches and metaphysical systems have particular ways of using language that lean towards one or another of the main grammatical categories. So, for example Heidegger can be thought of as an 'adverbial' thinker, Heraclitus as 'verbal', Vasubhandu as 'adjectival' and so on. This…
painting developed in a free-form and flowing way as the artist was mulling over the ideas put forward in the essay. Another painting in this series, titled "Onto-choreography with Parts of Speech" was also inspired by these ideas but uses a very different approach.
