About this artwork
In this painting, I explore the relationship between luminosity and decay through layers of gold, mineral textures, and saturated colour. The work evolved through a process of building, scraping back, and reconstructing the surface, allowing traces of previous layers to remain visible beneath the final composition.
I am fascinated by the way memory accumulates over time. The textured passages and architectural fragments emerge and dissolve within… the composition, suggesting structures that have been weathered, altered, and rediscovered. Areas of gold create a sense of permanence, while the vibrant red introduces movement, tension, and renewal.
Rather than depicting a specific place, I seek to create an atmosphere that feels both ancient and contemporary. The painting invites the viewer to navigate its layered surface, uncovering details that reveal themselves gradually through sustained observation.

Jenny McCarty is a self-taught British abstract painter based in Brighton, working primarily with acrylic mixed media on canvas, drawing deeply from her background as a published author. She creates rich, sculptural surfaces using layers of moulding paste, wallpaper paste, gold leaf, metallic pigments and gestural mark-making—her techniques evoke tactile depth and atmospheric intensity. Through raw yet luminous compositions, she beautifully explores themes of decay, transcendence, and emotional transformation, inviting viewers to experience complexity and resonance far beyond mere observation. Her work radiates an emotional frequency, offering permission to feel and immerse, leaving lasting impact on those who encounter it.
