About this artwork
Chine is from my current series 'Water'
It covers three quarters of our planet and makes up two thirds of our bodies. The island on which I live is surrounded by it and I am constantly engaged in childish fascination with it . The sea, water and reflection are major themes in this new series.
I work mainly with paper. For me it is a material charged with emotion and familiarity.
A birthday card, a thumbed paperback and a scribbled note are all… often sources of inspiration.
Since I was small I have made sense of my experiences by scrap booking and my current work is an evolution of this simple childhood activity.
Each work is attached to a birch ply substrate with a minimal aluminium edge. The paper is unglazed to reveal its natural texture and varnished in protective UV transparent varnish.

Jo Hummel is a young British talent whose works have featured in exhibitions, prizes and publications across Europe, the UK and US. Striving to balance innate human expression with a form of functional and economic design, she undertakes an improvised process that combines collage, painting and installation. She pairs gestural human marks with structural hard-edged forms, resulting in a distinctive artistic signature that seamlessly marries spontaneity and control.
