About this artwork
As I paint in oils and it is difficult to work plein air I often work from photographs and this particular painting is taken from one of a series I took of a herd of cows near Tenterden in Kent in spring of 2023. I liked this particular composition because you can only see part of the back of the fourth cow! I worked for a number of weeks on the canvas until I was satisfied with it, then it was professionally framed in a tray frame which is handpainted…
in cream slipper satin.

Jo Willis is a painter with a richly textured journey, beginning her artistic practice in her 50s after inheriting materials from her father and training in oils at various art academies. She employs oils, working with limited colour palettes and focusing on tonal contrast, expressive brushwork, and the dramatic interplay of sunlight and shadows. Her style blends sharp, unblended blocks of colour and strong compositions, often capturing people, animals, and nostalgic scenes. Her art radiates atmosphere and light, expressing the fleeting essence and emotional resonance of a moment remembered or imagined.
