About this artwork
Jerusalem, nestled in the Judean Mountains in the 11th century AD. Initially built as a small fortress, Jerusalem became the central hub of the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Their holy sites lie within the fortified walls of the Old City. For Christians, it is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built over the site where, according to tradition, Jesus' tomb was located; for Jews, the Western Wall. It was originally constructed… as the outer wall of a plateau where the Jewish Temple once stood. Today, the Muslim Dome of the Rock rises in its place. The Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount is the house of worship for Muslims. In hardly any other city is faith as present as in Jerusalem. (Text: Faber Courtial, Jörg Courtial)
During my apprenticeship as a decorator, I dealt with practical design on a daily basis and learned at a young age how to put the concept of an "eye-catcher" into practice. In my subsequent career as a media designer, the creative use of colors and accentuating materials was part of my everyday work. I see myself not just as a painter, but rather as a "picture maker," since many of my works are characterized by craftsmanship. I am very experimental in my work and often try out new techniques. Generally, paintings often bear titles that are confusing to the viewer and that almost only the artist understands. Therefore, I have always opted for cryptic names for my works. (of stars, "beautiful" women, or mystical figures). Incidentally, all my artwork is created "left-handed," which is because I am naturally left-handed. My "artist name" = JOARNO
