About this artwork
The little girl sits quietly on the traveling government photographer's bench. Toys she doesn't recognize lie beside her. Her seven siblings and her parents are arranged off to her left and pose with her in the semi-darkness. The photographer fusses, straightening jackets, brushing strands of hair in place. She thinks her big handsome farm boy brothers make him seem strange and insignificant. Her sisters preen a little which makes her smile.…
The photographer is telling her mother to hold a book as if she's reading it from her lap. He seems to think that it should be a secret that mama is having another baby. Her father stands severely straight and tall, but his bright blue eyes dance. The photographer flips on lights and surprises every one. Everyone settles. The little girl now looks at the camera with a touch of suspicious interest. Her lips purse into an almost imperious smile. It is an expression instantly recognized. So precious to me - her daughter.
