About this artwork
This drawing, created with gouache and graphite, presents a suspended moment of tension between form and dissolution. A large, pillowy, translucent blue shape seems to bulge and lean across a softly veiled field of pink and white—its surface modulated with brushy gradients and light reflection. The blue form appears to both press against and pour out from a pale central axis, which could be read as a stylized body or an architectural fragment. On…
the right, an outflow of graphite lines spills downward, fine and unruly, a gesture both visceral and diagrammatic.
The interplay between the dense, aqueous blue and the delicate graphite lines exemplifies my exploration of figuration and abstraction as "twinned languages."
The white space around the central elements is not empty but activated by subtle shifts in tone, echoing my use of veiling and opacity, erasure and solid volume. Spillage was made on heavy Italian printmaking paper and is signed on the reverse.

Jody Drafta, a visual artist and sculptor, expresses her creativity through gouache and graphite on paper, having first found her artistic voice through making sculptural models. She intertwines figuration and abstraction, manifesting as aqueous forms drowned in white or standing in stark contrast to each other, presenting an exploration of the relationship between body and space. Injected with visceral emotion and inspiring physical curiosity, Drafta’s works provoke inquiry into our physical and psychic presence, subtly interrogating the way we are separate from and crucially enmeshed with the world around us.
