In my studio practice, I work across drawing, sculpture and photography, often moving fluidly between them. I’m drawn to the quiet power of materials—their weight, fragility, texture, and resistance—and how these qualities shape a viewer’s physical and emotional response. My work engages space not just as a backdrop, but as an active participant: something to be leaned into, navigated, or noticed anew. I aim to create encounters that invite a heightened… attentiveness—experiences that stir physical empathy and curiosity through shifts in scale, rhythm, and form.
There is a theme in my work of those in power being humbled. And this piece draws on that theme given the kingly aspect of the figure, bouncing along in the sea, trying to connect to something within that unhelpful rhythm of the waves.
This piece is drawn on lighter weight drawing paper and is signed and dated on the reverse.
Jody Drafta, a visual artist and sculptor, expresses her creativity through gouache and graphite on paper, having first found her artistic voice through making sculptural models. She intertwines figuration and abstraction, manifesting as aqueous forms drowned in white or standing in stark contrast to each other, presenting an exploration of the relationship between body and space. Injected with visceral emotion and inspiring physical curiosity, Drafta’s works provoke inquiry into our physical and psychic presence, subtly interrogating the way we are separate from and crucially enmeshed with the world around us.
