About this artwork
When I was young my three siblings and myself had our favorite carousel horses to ride when we went to the fair. Now these gorgeous wooden sculptures are hard to find, having been replaced over the years with cheap plastic replicas. I wanted to start capturing them in paintings before they disappear altogether. This piece celebrates that childhood wonder and the magic of motion frozen in time, filling your home with warmth and playful charm.
By… the time I completed Carousel Horse I felt like a curator who had spent the last several months restoring an antique. To achieve the intense colors I polished specific parts of the painting with literally a dozen layers of paint, using glazing and thin stains until it shined like a jewel.
