About this artwork
This piece is a slight departure from the artist's normal routine:
Searching for ways to achieve a more physical approach to making art, Joris Graaf started to cut prints of his digital photographic artworks into smaller pieces and to physically rearrange these to create new compositions, much like a collage. The photographs of these paper assemblages are again processed digitally to complete the compositions.
The entire process has now become… quite complex: the prints which serve as the material to be cut into pieces, are themselves heavily processed multiple-exposure photographs of various scenes that the artist either found or created himself with paint, tape and other materials.
The artist views these hybrid pieces as potentially intermediate steps towards pure collage. They therefore represent the process of change, of growing, of becoming something real.
The print is on Hahnemühle German Etching paper and has a 1cm border to facilitate framing. The image size is 90x90 cm.

Joris Graaf describes himself as a completely intuitive and emotional artist. His works have recurring stylistic elements which include the intensity of composition and color combinations, high contrasts, as well as the interplay between order and chaos, melody and noise. Graaf’s artistic process begins with the quest for interesting textures and structures to photograph, which he often creates himself using varied materials. Several multiple-exposed photographs serve as the ‘raw ingredients’ of his compositions.
