About this artwork
Ancient Wanderer presents a pangolin curled into a protective form, its sculptural scales rendered in layered tones of grey, black, brown, burnt sienna, amber, and gold. Set against a deep black background, the figure feels both ancient and fragile. The work draws attention to one of the world’s most threatened mammals, inviting quiet reflection on vulnerability, survival, and protection.

Josie Ryan is an Irish wildlife painter based in Brussels. She studied Fine Art at Norwich University of the Arts, specialising in oil painting and copper etching. Her background in veterinary medicine and wildlife conservation in South Africa shapes her close attention to accuracy, respect, and lived experience in her subjects. Working primarily in oils, she focuses on structure, contrast, and the individuality of each animal. Her close compositions invite an intimate encounter with wildlife, blending realism with expressive movement. Her signature use of layered colour with touches of gold adds depth and a subtle radiance across the surface.
