About this artwork
This work presents a young woman in a boat, motionless in the middle of a lake at dusk. The figure, seen in a three-quarter-length position, shows her almost bare back, wearing a white blouse tied with thin ribbons. Her blond hair falls over one shoulder as her face is directed toward a point out of our view, reinforcing the introspective nature of the image. The light of the sunset takes center stage. It tints the whites of the scene with warm yellow…
and orange tones that contrast with the dominant range of blues of the water. This chromatic balance between cool and warm creates an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation. The boat is still, the oars rest in the water, and the slight movement of the surface barely alters the reflections of the figure and the boat. The square format of the work reinforces the compositional stability. The girl seems to have disconnected from the outside world, focused on something intimate and invisible to us.
