About this artwork
In Lives, I explore new forms of expression through anonymous figures cut out against pure color backgrounds. These figures, stripped of their original context, are brought into the painting with the intention of abstracting their existence and revealing only the essential. In this work, a man walks away while a woman advances toward the viewer. The two young people may or may not know each other. They cross paths in the painting, although perhaps…
they would never do so in real life. The subjects' clothing offers clues about the period in which they were captured. Beyond its aesthetic function, clothing is vitally important in providing internal information about the figures: it tells us about them, their identity, and their social and cultural context.
