About this artwork
“Kaiko” is about nostalgia, rebellion, and play colliding in one wave. Inspired by Hokusai’s iconic print, it reimagines the swell through a cartoon-grunge lens, with characters from the ’90s series Rocket Power riding across it like spirits of childhood freedom. The piece was created almost entirely by finger painting, giving the water its raw, tactile movement. Glow-in-the-dark pigment runs through the foam, while the layered gold leaf in the moon…
shifts with the light, changing its mood throughout the day. The kanji spells the title, while Roman numerals record the date of completion. Even the frame is part of the story: stained in mahogany, embedded with sand like a boardwalk, it was subconsciously built into the painting itself. Scattered across the work are hidden details—symbols, jokes, textures—that may take weeks to find, making “Kaiko” a piece that never stops revealing itself.
