About this artwork
Awakening is a deeply personal exploration of transformation and spiritual emergence. In this piece, I depict a lone figure stepping into a vast ocean, framed by towering, parting waves that evoke both chaos and clarity. The moment is suspended in time—a threshold between the known and the unknown, the physical and the divine.
Using a muted palette of soft whites, cool greys, dusky pinks, and earthy tones, I wanted to create a dreamlike atmosphere… that feels both meditative and powerful. The arched composition suggests a sacred portal, guiding the viewer into an inner journey—a visual metaphor for awakening, surrender, and resilience.
This painting is part of my ongoing exploration of contemporary surrealism and spiritual symbolism, where the external landscape becomes a reflection of the soul’s inner terrain. If you’re drawn to modern figurative art, mystical seascapes, or artworks that invite introspection, Awakening was created with you in mind.

« The process of creating a series of artworks is a simple meditation on life and spirituality. »
Julia Hacker is a Toronto-based contemporary painter creating vibrant, often large-scale works rooted in nature-inspired expressionism. Born in Minsk, Belarus, she studied art and design at Belarusian State University, earning a Master’s degree in Fashion Design before immigrating to Canada in 1990 and establishing her studio practice in Toronto. Her background in fashion continues to inform her sensitivity to colour, rhythm, pattern, and composition. Drawing from memory and imagination, Hacker builds layered paintings through gestural brushwork, expressive drawing, and intuitive relationships between colour and form. Her work has been exhibited across North America and presented at major art fairs. She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and is represented by ADC Fine Art and GalleryOne. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections internationally.
