About this artwork
I created Botanical Canopy as an abstract artwork on Mylar, exploring layered botanical forms and spatial depth. Broad gestural marks and overlapping leaf-like shapes create a dense, organic structure that moves between abstraction and natural reference. I was interested in how growth, accumulation, and translucency can be expressed through layered colour and line.
The work is created using acrylic paint on Mylar, allowing light to interact with… the surface and reveal subtle shifts in opacity and texture. The composition emphasizes movement, rhythm, and balance rather than literal representation. This original artwork functions well as a contemporary focal piece in modern, minimalist, and nature-inspired interiors.

« The process of creating a series of artworks is a simple meditation on life and spirituality. »
Julia Hacker is a Toronto-based contemporary painter creating vibrant, often large-scale works rooted in nature-inspired expressionism. Born in Minsk, Belarus, she studied art and design at Belarusian State University, earning a Master’s degree in Fashion Design before immigrating to Canada in 1990 and establishing her studio practice in Toronto. Her background in fashion continues to inform her sensitivity to colour, rhythm, pattern, and composition. Drawing from memory and imagination, Hacker builds layered paintings through gestural brushwork, expressive drawing, and intuitive relationships between colour and form. Her work has been exhibited across North America and presented at major art fairs. She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and is represented by ADC Fine Art and GalleryOne. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections internationally.
