About this artwork
Julia Hacker is a multidisciplinary artist who creates evocative works. "Distant Memories" is a stunning example of her skillful fusion of different media and her ability to convey complex emotions and ideas through visual language. The symbolism of "Distant Memories" is rich and open-ended, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences of nostalgia, distance, and relationships. The woman could represent a specific person, a generic archetype,…
or the artist herself. The horizon could represent a literal or metaphorical destination or the threshold between the known and the unknown.
Overall, "Distant Memories" is a masterful mix of oil and embroidery that showcases Julia Hacker's artistic vision and technical prowess. The piece is both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually stimulating, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its poetic and enigmatic atmosphere.

« The process of creating a series of artworks is a simple meditation on life and spirituality. »
Julia Hacker is a Toronto-based contemporary painter creating vibrant, often large-scale works rooted in nature-inspired expressionism. Born in Minsk, Belarus, she studied art and design at Belarusian State University, earning a Master’s degree in Fashion Design before immigrating to Canada in 1990 and establishing her studio practice in Toronto. Her background in fashion continues to inform her sensitivity to colour, rhythm, pattern, and composition. Drawing from memory and imagination, Hacker builds layered paintings through gestural brushwork, expressive drawing, and intuitive relationships between colour and form. Her work has been exhibited across North America and presented at major art fairs. She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and is represented by ADC Fine Art and GalleryOne. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections internationally.
