About this artwork
As the antagonist of light, the shadow in western culture often symbolizes insecurity, coldness and fear. Far Eastern culture, on the other hand, values the yin and yang of light and dark and gives the shadow a special meaning. Influenced by traditional Japanese aesthetics, Tervoort addresses the beauty and magic of shadows in the photo series “Black Spaces”. the effect of backlight and translucent surfaces, so that the edges of the paper are depicted as lines and the surfaces as deep shadows. With the means of photography, a reversed light space is created - a space in which the light directs the gaze to the shadow and its darkness, which protects us and allows our imagination to run free.

Julia Tervoort is an exciting German photographer whose works have featured in exhibitions, prizes and publications throughout the country. Initially inspired to pursue an artistic path by the Bauhaus movement during her architectural studies, she became fascinated by the language of light and the art of shadow in perceptions of space and materiality. Her photographs propose the poetry of light in unique spaces and from thought-provoking perspectives, overall achieving a rich visual narrative.
