The composition employs both organic and mechanical elements. In the lower section, the turtle is depicted in considerable detail; the textures of its shell, its scales, and its anatomy are clearly discernible, lending it a naturalistic character. However, this naturalism stands in stark contrast to the structure it bears upon its back—a dense, chaotic mass of machinery replete with parts, tubes, and gears, which appears improvised or even surreal.…
