About this artwork
"Pintura de Guerra" (War Paint) is a work in which I employed mixed media and collage to explore the connection between ancestral rituals and the efficacy of human action—a fundamental element in the relationship man perceives as essential for survival within his environment.
The significance of this work resonates across a broad spectrum of human activity, as war paint serves as a universal symbol of human nature.
Furthermore, the piece stands out… for its gestural abstraction, wherein the black strokes over the eyes and mouth appear to have been applied in an intuitive and physical manner. These gestures are not merely decorative; rather, they represent the psychological preparation required for a critical task, such as hunting or combat.
Julio Cesar Cepeda Duque is a painter, draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor, trained at the Samuel Feijóo Professional Art School in Cuba, with extensive experience in the art community. His work is distinguished by techniques such as monochrome and rough-textured drawing and printmaking, evoking the erosion of time, while exploring multiple materials and disciplines as each concept requires. He addresses themes such as human relationships, recycling, and the link between science and nature. He seeks to move the viewer, inviting them to reflect deeply, beyond the visual impact, on the richness and silent resilience of time.
