About this artwork
Everyone dreams of breaking free. People long for freedom from the tasks, organizations, or social groups they are currently bound to. Students dream of dropping out, office workers fantasize about throwing their resignation letter in front of their boss, and those involved in family care wish to leave and pursue their dreams.
However, when the long-awaited escape is turned into reality, it doesn’t always bring happiness. The sense of stability that… came from belonging is replaced with anxiety, and the familiar gaze of others turns into a sense of alienation. Even those who seemed to support the escape may dismiss it as "irresponsible," "immature," or "reckless," and eventually, they believe that the escape will end, and the person will return to where they once belonged.
In this way, breaking free gives us freedom but also brings the constraints of others’ judgment. If one truly plans to escape in life, it requires a personal resolve to free oneself from these societal perspectives.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
