I created Mù from observing hands during my embroidery practice —
the quiet moment that follows making, when something created is no longer in motion,
but simply held and seen.
In this work, the gesture becomes central.
The hands are not reaching outward, but opening —
as if to receive, to acknowledge,
or to hold something that is no longer visible.
I am… drawn to this subtle shift:
from creating to witnessing.
The gesture holds a sense of admiration —
not only toward what has been made,
but toward the act of making itself.
What is shaped by our own hands — whatever it may be —
carries time, effort, and presence.
Here, I allow that presence to remain, quietly, without urgency.
Mù is an invitation to pause.
To recognise what already exists.
To see with care, and with gentleness.
It is, in essence, a love letter —
to the act of making,
to myself,
and to you.

Kah Yan Chai is a textile-based artist whose practice explores how we experience the world through sensing, being seen, and perceiving.
Working with hand embroidery, she constructs layered surfaces that evoke the body, the gaze, and the shifting nature of perception. Her works do not seek to define fixed meanings, but instead hold space for multiple ways of understanding.
Her recent body of work unfolds as a quiet progression—from physical sensation, to awareness of being seen, to the realisation that perception is never singular. Through this, she reflects on how identity and understanding are continuously shaped, rather than given.
