About this artwork
"The Banyan tree [Ficus Benghalensis], native to India, also known as the "strangler fig", seeds sprouts and grows on other trees. As the seeds of a Banyan grow on its host, aerial roots descend from its branches and take root in the soil to become new trunks. After years of growth, the host will be 'strangled' and die. Once it has decayed, it leaves a hollowed out place that becomes a place for animals and birds to build their homes. It can reach… a height up to 100 feet, and spread laterally indefinitely. Almost every piece of the Banyan tree has its own medicinal property, used for centuries to treat illnesses and inflammation. "
After moving to Honolulu in 2019, I discovered and became fascinated by the Banyan trees and their aerials roots.
Kana Gray is a self-taught artist and photographer from Marseille, whose journey spans continents and mediums, from street and portrait photography to large-scale sculpture and installation. She masterfully weaves symbolism, duality, and nature into her work, using ropes, plants, and the human body to explore roots, growth, and transformation in inventive compositions that blend texture, color, and form. Her art invites viewers into moments of connection, vulnerability, and quiet beauty, conveying a deeply personal vision of unseen emotions and alternate ways of perceiving the world.
