About this artwork
"Mirada 2" (2026)
Oil on canvas — diameter 90 cm
Mirada 2 is an intensive play of perception between meaning, emotion and cosmic influences. Painted in oil on a circular canvas of 90 cm diameter, the work unfolds as a free expression that unifies raw gestural strokes with fine lines and soft colours, all set against a deep black background.
The circular format operates as both cosmological decision and compositional force — a porthole into a private… universe where opposing energies coexist without resolution. Impulsive bursts of colour emerge from the black ground rather than resting upon it, suggesting revelation over decoration. Fine white lines, almost calligraphic in nature, weave through the composition, holding tension with the expansive gestures surrounding them.
At the centre, a dark void anchored within an olive-yellow circle draws the eye inward — an abyss that returns the gaze, giving full meaning to the title. Organic, tangle-like forms introduce an intimate connection.
« I consider myself as a traveller and observer, expressing my reality and relation with the universe through painting. »
Karel Stoop (b. 1951, Made, Netherlands) is a Dutch abstract painter known for emotionally intuitive, layered compositions. Educated in the Netherlands and Barcelona, his work is shaped by global travels and deep existential inquiry. Stoop paints exclusively in Tarragona, Spain, where he explores themes of transformation, perception, and universal connection. Using oils, pigments, and industrial tools, his process is meditative and performative, guided by intuition over logic. Influenced by Rembrandt, Turner, Tapies, and Barcelo, his work has been exhibited across Europe and collected internationally. He is founder of the International Art Collective and director of GaleriaZero. Stoop is represented by MRK Contemporary (Dubai), HellHeaven Art Gallery (Rome/Miami), Singulart (Paris), and BrissArt Gallery (San Sebastián). His paintings reflect a personal ritual and a universal dialogue through abstraction.
