About this artwork
One could live a lifetime without ever seeing something like this: a monk, reminiscent of the Hermit from the Tarot, steps out into a field after sunset and beholds a scene: a girl, apparently a witch, one of those who have since childhood spoken with stones, lakes, wind, and the moon, accepts a blessing from a mysterious rider whose horse kneels before her. Apparently, there exists a force more powerful than the Church, unconquered and ever-present.… Three or more worlds meet in the twilight, breaking the laws of logic and human reason. All worlds are one, and each exists and has the right to claim the truth. Respect to the elder who dedicated his life to the Service, respect to the girl for her supernatural courage to wander in the darkness and solitude, respect to the unearthly being for its radiance and manifestation in the mundane world. There are two types of people - materialists who do not see miracles, and people with sacred thinking who see miracles every day in ordinary thing
Karina Kulyk, a Ukrainian-born artist now based in Germany, predominantly works in oil on small canvases, infusing her backgrounds in classical art, music, and restoration. She masterfully applies vibrant, contrasting colors with direct brushwork, often eschewing sketches and favoring techniques reminiscent of Fayum portraits and distressed icons. Her art conjures fantastical beings and otherworldly landscapes, embodying Symbolism and phantasmagoria, where texture takes a backseat to vivid imagery. Through her work, she channels the haunting allure of immortality and surreal beauty, contrasted by poignant melancholy and existential longing.
