About this artwork
I positioned myself beneath the Well Street elevated bridge, my camera trained on the Chicago River as the commuter train clattered above. The scene was a palimpsest of Chicago’s history—each rivet in the bridge, each ripple in the river, each passenger in the train’s glowing windows a thread in the city’s storied fabric. I imagined the river as a witness to it all: the Great Fire, the World’s Fair, the rise of skyscrapers, and now this daily ritual… of transit.
The train’s passage was brief, but my lens caught its energy—the blur of motion against the bridge’s stoic frame, the river reflecting the city’s ceaseless ambition. The photograph is a dialogue with time, layering the present over the past. The muted greens of the river, the rusted patina of the bridge, and the sleek silver of the train create a visual history, a moment where Chicago’s past and present collide.
