About this artwork
In this work, I explore the 'quiet environment' of jazz at its most introspective. Inspired by the modal masterpiece 'Blue in Green'—a composition that exists in the delicate space between Bill Evans’ intimate touch and Miles Davis’s cool, melancholic restraint—I have sought to translate the feeling of a musical interval into colour. This painting is s not a representation of 'loud' jazz; it is an exploration of the 'subtle' music. The canvas is…
dominated by varying shades of blue and green, with layers of paint wash over one another like the shifting harmonies of a modal progression. Amidst these atmospheric fields, I have introduced structural 'whims and twirls'—calligraphic notations and rhythmic markings that function as the 'melody' rising out of the blue.
