About this artwork
This large-scale oil painting, The Vulnerability Index, is my vision of a planet at its chaotic, apocalyptic tipping point.
I use turbulent, swirling blues and explosive ochres to capture the overwhelming intensity of the climate crisis. At the canvas's heart is the figure of the Painted Bat (Kerivoula picta), a beautiful, tiny creature whose own fate is a direct indictment of human sickness.
Its tragic story compelled me: this bat is hunted and… killed for the selfish purpose of being sealed as a taxidermy trinket. I use its fierce, fragile emergence to represent the fundamental human failure—the morbid impulse to destroy and possess what is beautiful—which is the root of the planetary crisis I have rendered here.
